Hello!!! Today's post will be devoted to internationalized domain names
in Arabic world.
As you already know from my previous posts, Arabic domain names were the
first non-Latin URLs that became available in the World Wide Web. This event,
which took place in May, 2009, became a real milestone in the Internet history, as Arabic is spoken by about 280-million people worldwide.
Among the countries which were
allowed to use Arabic script in web addresses are Egypt, Saudi Arabia and
United Arab Emirates.
In Egypt, the most populous of Arab countries, it became possible to register names
under the .misr domain, written from
right to left in Arabic script as the default country code for domestic
websites. "Misr" is the Arabic name for Egypt. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also
introduced the new codes,
Nowadays there are thousands of web sites in
the Internet using Arabic Web addresses. But, quite often browsers have
troubles with opening such web pages. For example, I tried to enter approximately
20 Arabic sites and succeeded only in 3 of them. As experts say,
this problem can be solved by installing software updates for web browsers, such as
downloading additional language packs.
